Fueling Excellence: A Scholarship Program from the Southern Company Gas Foundation

Southern Company Gas Foundation is proud to sponsor the Fueling Excellence Scholarship Program to assist the children of employees who are pursuing higher education at a two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Fueling Excellence: A Scholarship Program from the Southern Company Gas Foundation

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be dependent* children or stepchildren of active full-time Southern Company Gas employees who have a minimum of one (1) year employment with the company as of the application deadline date, and remain employed until recipients are announced.
    *Dependent children are children who qualify as federal tax exemptions to the employee.
  • Be under the age of 22 (or under the age of 26 if the applicant has served in the armed forces) as of the application deadline date,  and a federal income tax dependent of such employee.
  • Be 2025 high school graduates or current college undergraduates.
  • Plan to enroll, or be enrolled, in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.

Children of officers of Southern Company Gas or children of operation personnel within the Southern Company Gas Foundation are not eligible.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances

Financial need will not be considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Southern Company Gas Foundation play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification

Scholarship America will notify all applicants by early February. Communications regarding the status of your submitted application will also be sent to your parent/alternate contact person.

Award Information

Up to twenty (20) awards will granted as follows:

  • Two (2) awards of $10,000 each will be granted to the top-ranked applicants; preference will be given to students majoring in STEM disciplines.
  • Up to eighteen (18) awards of $2,500 each will be granted to the highest-ranked applicants remaining.

Awards are renewable up to three (3) years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance and maintaining full-time enrollment status.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

The program will be administered in full compliance with IRS Revenue Procedure 76-47. No more than 25% of eligible applicants may receive awards.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Southern Company Gas Foundation. Payments are made in one installment in late July.

NOTE: please use a non-school email address to establish your Scholarship America Hub account.

Only online applications via the Scholarship America Hub will be accepted. You, the applicant, are responsible for gathering and submitting all required information. This is a competitive program. Your application is evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, answer all applicable questions as completely as possible. Read and follow the instructions provided for each section of the application. Before registering, you may wish to gather the following information needed to submit your application:

  • Employee parent’s ID number, date of hire, telephone number and email address
  • Your transcript of grades (and standardized test scores if current high school senior)*
  • Work history
  • School and community activities
  • Short statement of your educational and career objectives

*As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
    • Student name
    • School name
    • Grades
    • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

    NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

    Your application is not complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
