Pathways to Careers in Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration Scholarship

International Rescue Committee, Inc. has established a scholarship program to assist current interns who are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate study and pursuing a career in social or humanitarian work.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Have an intern offer at an IRC Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration (RAI) office serving August 2024 – October 2024. Scholarship awards contingent on successful completion.
  • Identify as a member of an underrepresented or marginalized group (including but not limited to underrepresented ethnic/racial populations, LGBTQIA+, individuals with disabilities, etc.)
  • Be currently enrolled in part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • Be pursuing a career in social work, humanitarian assistance, policy, public administration, or related field.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • Statement of goals and aspirations
  • Character essay*
  • An online recommendation.

Financial need will be considered. Recipients must demonstrate need.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of International Rescue Committee, Inc. play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

*Essay Topic

1,000 character essay about overcoming social and/or physical
obstacles and/or about your living environment or academic setting and how it may have hindered your educational
pursuits.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $3,500 award. Up to twelve (12) awards each will be granted.

Awards are one-time only. Past recipients may not apply.

Awards are for undergraduate and graduate study. Awards cannot be used to pay off student loans.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in July.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of International Rescue Committee, Inc. Payment is made out to the educational institution on behalf of the student in August.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than May 28, 2024 3:00 pm Central Time.
