The American Express Scholarship Program was established in 1987 and is currently funded by the American Express Foundation to encourage and recognize academic excellence and help American Express employees fund their children’s undergraduate college education. Scholarship awards may be used for undergraduate study at accredited colleges or universities in the U.S. and Canada.
This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals to improve access to postsecondary education.
Applicants to the American Express Scholarship Program must be:
*Dependent children are defined as natural and legally adopted children or stepchildren living in the employee’s household or primarily supported by the employee.
** Students who are in their junior year and plan to graduate early may also apply now. Any questions regarding eligibility, including CEGEP in Quebec, please call Scholarship America at 1-800-537-4180, ext. 332
Scholarship awards range from $2,000 to $4,000 per year, based on financial need, and are renewable up to three years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance in full-time study and continuation of the program by American Express Foundation.
Applicants who do not demonstrate financial need, as determined by Scholarship America or whose parents choose not to supply the requested financial information, may be considered for a one-time honorarium of $750.
Awards are for undergraduate study only and are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin
The application process runs from November through February 3, with the application to be postmarked by February 3. Applicants will be notified on or before April 16. Only current application forms will be accepted. Late or incomplete applications will be disqualified.
Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes American Express scholarship payments on behalf of American Express Foundation. Payments are made in equal installments in late August and mid-December. Checks are mailed to each recipient’s home address and are made payable to the school.
All commitments are made by the American Express Foundation and are not dependent on continued parental employment at American Express Company.
Recipients have no obligation to American Express Foundation. They are, however, required to notify Scholarship America of any changes in address, school enrollment, or other relevant information and send a complete transcript when requested.
American Express Foundation reserves the right to review the conditions and procedures of this scholarship program and to make changes at any time, including termination of the program.
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:
Once scholarship recipients are selected, financial need is assessed to determine the amount of each award.
Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of American Express Company or American Express Foundation play a part in the selection. Applicants, recipients and schools are screened to comply with U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) requirements. All applicants agree to accept the decision of Scholarship America as final. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients or receive a one-time honorarium.
Participation in the American Express Scholarship program is voluntary. By submitting the American Express Scholarship application, you are agreeing to share your financial and personal identifiable information with Scholarship America, a third party, which administers this program on behalf of the American Express Foundation.
The scholarship application is confidential and will not be shared with American Express – except when needed for servicing purposes (e.g., confirmation of employment, to assist with eligibility, communication, etc.), or as required by law. Personally identifiable information (e.g. employee name, employee id, employee email, dependent child’s home address, email address, date of birth, etc.) will not be shared with another third-party except for servicing the scholarship (e.g. scholarship recipient checks or status of the scholarship recipient at their university, etc.).
The scholarship application becomes the property of Scholarship America. Non-recipient applications are maintained for one year and then destroyed. Scholarship recipient applications are maintained for the award period plus one additional year, and then destroyed.
Interested students must complete the application and mail it along with a current, complete transcript of grades to Scholarship America postmarked no later than February 3, 2020. Grade reports are not acceptable. Unofficial transcripts must display student name, school name, grade and credit hours earned for each course, and term in which each course was taken. High school seniors or students who have completed less than one full term of postsecondary school should submit a high school transcript. Students who have completed the equivalent of one term or more postsecondary credits should provide transcripts from all postsecondary schools attended.
Applicants will receive acknowledgment of receipt of their application. If an acknowledgment is not received within three weeks, applicants may call Scholarship America to verify that their application has been received.
