The Arch Coal Scholars Program recognizes the outstanding high school achievements of dependent sons and daughters of active employees of Arch Coal, Inc. and its subsidiaries. The program is designed to provide financial support to assist students in realizing their goals for higher education.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability, or national origin.

Applicants to the Arch Coal Scholars Program must be:

  • Dependent* children, of employees Arch Coal, Inc. or its subsidiaries who have a minimum of two years of full-time employment as of the application deadline.
*Dependent children are defined as natural and legally adopted children or stepchildren living in the employee’s household or primarily supported by the employee.
  • High school seniors who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.

Award Amounts

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $2,000 award.  Up to eight (8) awards will be granted.

Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance as follows:

  • Freshman year: Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Sophomore year: Cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
  • Junior year: Cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Recipients must remain enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study to remain eligible to renew their award. Renewals will not be subject to employment status of the Arch Coal, Inc. employee parent. Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Scholarship deferrals may be granted to students for a leave of absence from their studies for special circumstances. Requests for deferral must be submitted in writing to Scholarship America.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. Financial need is not considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Arch Coal, Inc. or any of its subsidiaries play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification

Applicants will be notified in April. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.
