BCBSRI Employee Dependent Scholarship
Live application window: May 1, 2024 through May 23, 2024 4:00 pm EST

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Employees Scholarship Foundation has established a scholarship program to assist children of employees who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to the BCBSRI Employee Dependent Scholarship must:

  • Be (dependent*) children, age 25 and under, of full-time Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island employees (up to and including managing director) who have a minimum of one (1) year employment with the company as of the application deadline date.
*Dependent children are defined as biological, step- or legally adopted children living in the employee’s household or primarily supported by the employee
  • High school seniors or graduates, or current postsecondary undergraduates, who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school** for the entire upcoming academic year.
**Certification programs must be through an accredited institution and must run on a standard academic semester calendar. Certification programs must be a minimum of one semester/term in length and recipients must be enrolled at the time awards are disbursed in August.

Children of Vice President and above are ineligible.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Financial need
  • Work experience
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • A 1,000-character essay question
    • Essay Topic: Tell us about a major contribution you’ve made in your community. How did it impact you, and why do you think it’s important to contribute to your community?

Information that may be saved by the student in their Scholarship America Hub account (e.g. standardized test scores, letters of recommendation) that is not required within the BCBSRI employee dependent scholarship application will not be considered in the selection of recipients.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island or the BCBSRI Employees Scholarship Foundation play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $2,000 award. Up to four (4) awards will be granted. Awards are not renewable, but students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Students may only receive the award a maximum of two (2) years. Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in July.
