Blue Cross NC Scholars Family Scholarship Program
Deadline to apply: April 22, 2021 3:00 pm CT

Blue Cross NC established a scholarship program to assist qualified dependents of employees pursuing an undergraduate degree program at an accredited college, university or vocational school.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance, and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of Blue Cross NC.  Eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team. Awards for this scholarship are granted to eligible recipients without regard to creed, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin.

Applicants to the Blue Cross NC Scholars Family Scholarship Program must be:

  • A qualified dependent*, age 25 or under, of a benefit-eligible Blue Cross NC or NC Health Affiliates employee, with at least one year of service as of the application deadline.
*Definition of qualified dependent will be consistent with the definition of an eligible dependent as defined for the Blue Cross NC health plan.
  • High school seniors or graduates, or current postsecondary undergraduates, who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.

Qualified dependents of Blue Cross NC officers, including all employees in a Vice President level or above, are ineligible to apply.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $5,000 award. Up to 10 awards will be granted. Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance of maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in a full-time course of study, continued parental employment* with Blue Cross NC and continuation of the program by Blue Cross NC.

* If the employment of a recipient’s parent ends due to death, disability or retirement they will be eligible for renewal.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an online appraisal. Financial need is not considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Blue Cross NC play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification

Applicants will be notified in June. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.
