Blue Scholars Scholarship Program & John C. Foster Scholarship Program

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona has established a scholarship program to assist employees’ children who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team. Awards for this scholarship are granted to eligible recipients without regard to disability, race, color, national origin, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity) or religion.

Eligibility
Applicants to the Blue Scholars Scholarship Program and John C. Foster Scholarship Program must be

  • Dependent* children, up to and including age 26, of full-time or part-time Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona employees who have a minimum of one year of employment with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona as of the application deadline date.
    *Dependent children are children who qualify for benefits provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona.
  • High school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.

To be eligible for a John C. Foster award, applicants must be planning to enroll at Arizona State University or an affiliate.

Children of officers (executives, vice presidents) are not eligible to apply. Employee must be employed at the time checks are issued to receive award.

Award
If selected as a Blue Scholars recipient, the student will receive a $2,000 award. Up to ten (10) Blue Scholars awards will be granted annually.

If selected as a John C. Foster Scholarship recipient, the student will receive a $2,000 award. Up to five (5) John C. Foster awards will be granted annually.

Students may receive only one scholarship per year – either the Blue Scholars award or the John C. Foster award. Awards are not renewable, but students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification
Applicants will be notified by the end of June. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. Payments are made in one installment in early August.

Selection of Recipients
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation

Financial need is also considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

As part of your application, you must upload the following documents:

  • Current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Unofficial or online transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course, and term in which each course was taken.

    NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than May 11, 2023 3:00 pm Central Time.

Your application is not considered complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
