CITGO Innovation College Scholarship Program

CITGO Petroleum Corporation has established a scholarship program to assist students who are current or past participants in a CITGO internship and/or co-op program at select locations who plan to continue their education in college and are considering a career in the energy industry.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to the CITGO Innovation College Scholarship Program must:

  • Be currently enrolled at an accredited two- or four-year college or university
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)
  • Be a current or past participant in a CITGO internship and/or co-op program at one of the following locations:
    • Corpus Christi, TX
    • Houston, TX
    • Lemont, IL
    • Lake Charles, LA
  • Be in good standing with CITGO human resources (current or completed internship/co-op program)
  • Plan to enroll at an accredited two or four-year college or university or graduate study for the entire upcoming academic year
  • Be willing to consider a career in the energy industry.

Dependents of CITGO employees or retirees are not eligible.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school, volunteer, and community activities
  • Work experience
  • Statement on how your internship/co-op, coursework, or extracurricular activities will contribute to your career goals after college or university
  • Statement of financial need and/or unusual personal or family circumstances (if applicable)

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of CITGO Petroleum Corporation play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in May. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of CITGO Petroleum Corporation. Payments are made in one installment early August.

Awards

The authorized distribution for new awards is $50,000. Up to twenty-five (25) awards of $2,000 each will be granted.

Assuming a sufficient number of qualified applications are received, awards will be disbursed as follows:

  • Approximately ten (10) awards will be granted to applicants from Lake Charles, LA
  • Approximately five (5) awards each for the following locations:
    • Corpus Christi, TX
    • Houston, TX
    • Lemont, IL

Awards are not renewable; however, students may reapply to the program each year they continue to meet eligibility requirements and this program is offered by the Sponsor.

Awards are for undergraduate and graduate study.

Due to the internship requirement, awards will be taxable to the recipient, and Scholarship America will inform recipients during the scholarship acceptance process.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
    • Student name
    • School name
    • Grades
    • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
