Dream Award Emergency Grant Program

Scholarship America, Inc. has established an emergency funding program to assist current Dream Award recipients who meet all Dream Award eligibility requirements.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability or national origin.

Applicants to the Dream Award Emergency Grant Program must:

  • Be a current Dream Award student
  • Have unexpected financial difficulties which may impact your ability to stay in school
  • Be able to upload documentation of eligible expense (see “Required Documents” for more information)

What expenses are eligible?

  • Housing/Rent/Utilities
  • Medical/Dental
  • Childcare
  • Transportation/Car Repair (not gas or insurance)
  • Food/Groceries
  • Technology/Computer/Wi-Fi

Books, tuition and fees, and required course materials are not eligible.

What is the grant maximum?

The maximum grant is $1,000. Requests for food and groceries up to $500 can be approved.

How fast can I receive the grant?

Decisions for all applications are made within one business day. Approved requests will be paid within three business days. Note: Processing times may take longer during surges and in cases where we are missing documentation, payment info, or electronic payment is not available.

If my application is approved, how will I receive the payment?

Grants will be made payable directly to you via JP Morgan Chase’s Corporate Quick Pay. If your request is approved, you will receive an email with additional instructions.

Is the grant taxable?

Grants may be considered taxable income. Work with a tax professional to determine if your grant is taxable.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • Documentation of expenses (i.e. bills, invoices, receipts) to verify the amount of emergency need request. Documentation must include:
    • Your name
    • Vendor’s name, address and phone number
    • Itemized list of expense(s) and total expense
    • An expense after June 5, 2020

Your application is not complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
