Charles W. Finkl Scholarship Program

Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation (FIERF) has established the Charles W. Finkl Scholarship Program to assist college juniors and seniors, with select majors, pursue their postsecondary education. Renewable scholarships are offered for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice.

This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team. Awards for this scholarship are granted to eligible recipients without regard to creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, or national origin.

Applicants to the Charles W. Finkl Scholarship Program must be:

  • College sophomores (students entering into their junior year in the fall) or college juniors (students entering into their senior year* in the fall.)
  • Citizens of Canada, Mexico, or the United States.
  • Full-time students who are majoring in chemical, computer, electrical, industrial, materials, mechanical, or metallurgical engineering at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • Maintaining a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 or above, on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent.

*Students entering their senior year may apply to receive a one-year scholarship, or two years if enrolled in a five-year program and all conditions of renewal are met.

In addition to this program, applicants may also apply to both the Al Underys Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Science Scholarship and the Forging Industry Women’s Scholarship, but are only eligible to receive one award. In the event an applicant would be a potential recipient of more than one award, the order of preference is as follows:

    1. Al Underys Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Science Scholarship
    2. Forging Industry Women’s Scholarship
    3. Charles W. Finkl Fund Scholarship

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award in the amount of $2,000.

Awards are renewable for up to one additional year or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon continued full-time enrollment in one of the eligible fields of study, and maintaining a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 or above, on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent.

Notification

Applicants will be notified in late June. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes Charles W. Finkl Scholarship payments on behalf of FIERF. Payment is made in one installment in early August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic performance
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • Statement of career and educational aspirations and goals
  • Statement of unusual circumstances
  • Industry related essay questions
  • An online recommendation

Financial need is not considered.

Credit will be given to applicants who have worked or interned at an industry Forging Industry Association (FIA) Member Company.

Scholarship America will select up to 75 finalists and FIERF will select up to 15 recipents. All applicants agree to accept the decision of FIERF and Scholarship America as final.

As part of your application, you must upload the following documents:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than April 18, 2023 3:00 pm Central Time.

Your application is not complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
