Genentech Futurelab Scholarship Program

The Genentech Futurelab Scholarship will support diverse and talented students pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The program will award up to 10 scholarships to high school seniors graduating from El Camino High School or South San Francisco High School in South San Francisco, California, who plan to enroll full-time in a STEM course of study.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to the Genentech Futurelab Scholarship Program must be:

  • High school seniors attending El Camino High School or South San Francisco High School, in South San Francisco, CA, since 9th grade.
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • Intended major in a STEM field (to view eligible majors, visit US Department of Education’s STEM degree list).
  • Have a minimum weighted grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent).

Awards

In 2025, the Genentech Futurelab Scholarships will include:

  • Two (2) scholarships of $10,000 each will be granted for students attending an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Eight (8) scholarships of $2,000 each will be granted for students attending an accredited two-year or four-year college or university.
  • Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, for a total maximum award of up to $40,000 or $8,000. Renewal is contingent upon maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and continued full-time enrollment in a STEM course of study.
  • Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on a number of factors, including:

  • A passion for STEM
  • Strong academic performance
  • Leadership & Persistence
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Two Letters of Recommendation

Selection of recipients is made by Genentech USA, Inc. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification

Selected recipients will be notified of their award no later than April 25, 2025. Applicants not selected will be notified of their status in April 2025. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Genentech USA, Inc. Payments are made in one installment in August.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
    • Student name
    • School name
    • Grades
    • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
  • A copy of page 1 & 2 of the parent/guardian 1040 IRS tax form (Please black out SSN).
  • Signed copy of Genentech’s Appearance Release Waiver.

Two Online Letters of Recommendation must be submitted on your behalf no later than February 7, 2025 2:00 pm Central Time.
