Applicants to the Genentech Futurelab Emergency Grant Program must meet all of the following criteria:

  • A recipient of the Genentech Futurelab Scholarship (including new and past recipients of one-time & renewable awards)
  • A current postsecondary undergraduate student enrolled full-time and majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math
  • Within four years from high school graduation
  • Have unexpected financial difficulties which may impact school enrollment and success
  • Be able to upload a course schedule* to verify enrollment
  • Be able to upload documentation of eligible expense**

*Course schedule must include student name, courses and credit hours for each course.

** Eligible expenses must have been incurred within thirty (30) days of application submission to be considered for reimbursement. Expenses are for one-time emergency need situations and not meant to address long-standing challenges. Students may select only one eligible expense category on the application. Acceptable documentation for eligible expense includes bills, invoices, and receipts. Documentation must include student name, third party name, address and phone number, itemized list of expense(s) and total expense.

What student expenses are eligible?

  • Housing/Rent/Utilities
  • Medical/Dental
  • Childcare
  • Transportation/Car Repair (not gas or insurance)
  • Food/Groceries
  • Technology/Computer/Wi-Fi

Books, tuition and fees, and required course materials are not eligible.

Eligible expenses must support the student and/or the location where the student is residing.

What is the grant maximum?

The maximum grant is $1,000. Requests for food and groceries up to $500 can be approved.

How fast can I receive the grant?

Decisions for all applications are made within one business day. Approved requests will be paid within three business days. Note: Processing times may take longer during surges and in cases where we are missing documentation, payment info, or electronic payment is not available.

If my application is approved, how will I receive the payment?

Grants will be made payable directly to you via JP Morgan Chase’s Concourse. If your request is approved, you will receive an email with additional instructions.

Is the grant taxable?

Grants may be considered taxable income. Work with a tax professional to determine if your grant is taxable.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • Course schedule that includes your name, courses and credit hours for each course
  • Documentation of expenses (i.e. bills, invoices, receipts) to verify the amount of emergency funding requested. Documentation must include:
    • Your name
    • Vendor’s name, address and phone number
    • Itemized list of expense(s) and total expense
    • An expense incurred within thirty (30) days of application submission

Only PDF, JPG, and PNG file types are allowed. Photo of paper receipts acceptable if in one of these formats.

Your application is not complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
