Generation Google Scholarship - North America
Application status: Closed

Google has established a scholarship program to assist students who plan to continue their education in college pursuing a computer science, computer engineering, or closely related technical field.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelors program at an accredited university or college OR currently enrolled as a high school senior for the 2022-23 academic year
  • Accepted as a full-time student in a Bachelors program at an accredited university in the United States or Canada for the 2023-2024 academic year
  • Be studying computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related technical field
  • Demonstrate a strong academic record
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Exemplify leadership and demonstrate passion for improving representation of underrepresented groups in computer science and technology

Children of Google employees are ineligible.

Awards

Recipients attending college in Canada will receive awards of $5,000.00 CAD (or the USD equivalent) and recipients attending college in the United States will receive awards of $10,000.00 USD.

Up to 55 awards will be granted. The award payments will be issued in U.S. dollars (USD).

Awards are one-time only. Past recipients of the following scholarships: Generation Google Scholarship, Generation Google Scholarship: for women in gaming, Generation Google Scholarship: for supply chain and fulfillment, Google Lime Scholarship, Google Student Veterans of America Scholarship, Women Techmakers Scholarship for Computer Science, Women Techmakers Scholarship for Gaming, Google Europe Students with Disabilities Scholarship, Generation Google Scholarship: for women in computer science in Ireland, or Venkat Panchapakesan Scholarships India are not eligible to reapply.

The Generation Google Scholarship award can be used for any education-related expenses.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in July.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Google. Payment are made in August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation
  • Two essay* responses

Financial need will be considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Google play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

*Essay Topics
The essays are 2,000 characters or approximately 500 words in length each.

  1. Tell me about a time when you faced a complex problem without a clear path to a solution. Describe the steps you took to get to the solution in detail. What resources and solutions did you consider? What did you learn from this experience? Keep in mind that this can be a problem you have faced at school, work, extracurricular activities or home.
  2.  

  3. From your personal experience, describe a barrier that prevents equitable access to the field of technology. What do you believe is the root cause? What actions have you taken to address this inequity and what actions do you plan to take? Please focus at least half of your response on the actions you have taken. Keep in mind that impact can happen in many ways and at different scales.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
  • U.S. citizens: A copy of the first two pages of the most recently filed IRS Form 1040 used for the Financial Information Page.
  • Canadian citizens: A copy of the most recently filed Canadian Tax Document
