Helzberg Kansas City Symphony Scholarship Program

The Helzberg Kansas City Symphony Scholarship Program was established to assist children of full-time Kansas City Symphony musicians and staff who plan to continue their education in college, vocational, technical, or graduate school programs. Scholarships are offered for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice for the upcoming school year.

This program is administered by Scholarship America┬«, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability, or national origin.

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be children, age 25 and under, of full-time Kansas City Symphony musicians and staff.
  • Be high school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate or graduate course of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, vocational-technical school, or graduate school for the entire upcoming academic year.

Award Amounts

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award ranging from $2,000 to $4,000.

Awards are not renewable, however, students may reapply each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Awards are for undergraduate and graduate study.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic information, leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an online recommendation.

Financial need will be considered. Financial need, as calculated by Scholarship America, must be demonstrated.


Applicants will be notified in June.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of The Shirley and Barnett Helzberg Foundation. Payments are made to the school/university in one installment in early August.

As part of your application, you must upload the following documents:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grade and credit hours, and term in which the course was taken.
  • Copy of the first two pages of the most recently filed IRS Form 1040.

Also as part of your application, one online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf by 3:00 p.m. Central Time on May 26, 2020.

Your application is not considered complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
