Sentara Healthcare has established a scholarship program to assist children or grandchildren of employees who plan to continue their education in college.
This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Sentara Healthcare determines eligibility for this program and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team. Awards for this scholarship are granted to eligible recipients without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability, or national origin.
Applicants to the Howard Kern Legacy Scholarship Program must:

If selected as a recipient, awards will be disbursed as follows:
If a student transfers institutions, the award will be adjusted accordingly per the new school type.
Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years provided the recipient meets the criteria for renewal. Recipients may apply to renew their award if they move from a undergraduate to a graduate degree.
Criteria for renewal is satisfactory academic performance (maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale) in a part-time or full-time course of study, continued employment of the student’s parent or grandparent, and continuation of the program by Sentara Healthcare.
Awards are for undergraduate and graduate study.
All applicants will be notified in August.
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Sentara Healthcare. Payment is made in August.
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:
Financial need is not considered. Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America and in no instance does any officer or employee of Sentara Healthcare play a part in the selection.
Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than June 30, 2023 3:00 pm Central Time.
