Howard P. Allen Scholarship Program

Edison International established the Howard P. Allen Scholarship Program for dependents of non-executive Edison International and Southern California Edison employees and retirees who plan to continue their education in college.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible application are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants must be:

  • Dependent children* of part-time or full-time, permanent non-executive Edison International employees** or retirees.
    *Dependent children include natural or adopted children, stepchildren, or wards of Edison International employees. The qualifying parent must provide a major portion of the student’s financial support.
    **This program is offered to employees and retirees of Edison International and Southern California Edison. Deceased employees’ children are not eligible for this program. Dependents of Executive employees (director and above) are not eligible.
  • A high school senior, a graduate from high school, or an undergraduate who is currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university, junior college, or vocational-technical school in the U.S. for the entire academic year.
    OR
    Students currently attending community college who have sufficient transferable credits to enroll in a program leading to a baccalaureate degree at an accredited U.S. four-year college or university for the entire academic year as a junior.

The application must be completed by the student and not the parent/employee.

Awards

  • 25 – $2,500 scholarships for current high school seniors planning to attend a full-time course of study at an accredited U.S. vocational-technical school, community college, or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • 25 – $2,500 scholarships for current college undergraduate students planning to attend a full-time course of study at an accredited U.S. vocational-technical school, community college, or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • 10 – $2,500 scholarships for current community college students who have sufficient transferable credits to enroll in a program leading to a baccalaureate degree in a full-time course study at an accredited U.S. four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year as a junior.

Awards are not renewable. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. Students may receive the award a maximum of four times.

All awards are for undergraduate study only and can be used for education-related expenses.

If there are not enough qualified applicants in any one group listed above, awards may be allocated to another group to make full award distribution.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • Statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Community impact essay
  • An online recommendation.

Recipients are selected by Scholarship America. All information received is considered confidential. In no instance does any officer or employee of Edison International play a part in the selection. Decisions of the selection committee are final and not subject to appeal. This program is competitive; not all applicants will be selected as recipients.

The selection process will not be influenced or affected by the actual or perceived race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, disability, age, gender, or sexual orientation of any applicant.

Notification

Applicants will be notified of their status via email in late April. This is a competitive program. Not all applicants will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Edison International. Payment is made in one installment in August. The payment is mailed to the student’s home address made payable to the educational institution.

As part of your application, you must upload the following document(s):

  • Current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course, and term in which each course was taken.
  • NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload an official copy of those test scores separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than March 14, 2024 11:59 p.m. PT.
