Richard O. Jacobson Legacy Scholarship Program

The Richard O. Jacobson Foundation has established a scholarship program to assist students who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs. Renewable scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at an approved accredited institution.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance, and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability, or national origin.

Applicants to the Richard O. Jacobson Legacy Scholarship Program must:

  1. Be residents of Iowa
  2. Be high school seniors or graduates or current postsecondary undergraduates enrolling full-time in one of the following schools for the entire 2020-2021 academic year:
    • Iowa State University
    • University of Iowa
    • University of Northern Iowa
    • Iowa-based community college:
      • Northeast Iowa Community College
      • North Iowa Area Community College
      • Iowa Lakes Community College
      • Northwest Iowa Community College
      • Iowa Central Community College
      • Iowa Valley Community College District
      • Hawkeye Community College
      • Eastern Iowa Community College District
      • Kirkwood Community College
      • Des Moines Area Community College
      • Western Iowa Tech Community College
      • Iowa Western Community College
      • Southwestern Community College
      • Indian Hills Community College
      • Southeastern Community College
  3. Be pursuing a first Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree or Vocational/Technical certificate
  4. Area of study
    • Iowa State University, University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa: no restriction of study
    • Iowa-based community college: study restricted to vocational/technical areas of study (ie- automotive mechanic, electrician certificate, nursing, etc …)
  5. Demonstrate financial need
  6. Have a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale)

Students enrolling for a second Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree and graduate students studying for a master’s Degree or Ph.D. are not eligible.

Children of officers and board members of the Richard O. Jacobson Foundation are ineligible.

Award information:

  • If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award up to $10,000.
  • Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first.
  • Renewal is contingent upon maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Recipients must remain enrolled full-time at one of the eligible schools (Iowa State, University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, Iowa-based community college).
  • All additional years of renewal may be requested by the recipient and must be approved by the sponsor.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

Applicants will be notified in May. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Richard O. Jacobson Foundation. Payments are made in one installment in August.

Selection of Recipients:

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in scho0l and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an online recommendation.

Financial need as calculated by Scholarship America must be demonstrated for the student to receive an award.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Richard O. Jacobson Foundation play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Program Deadline

Your application must be submitted on or before 3:00 p.m. Central Time on March 25, 2020.

As part of your application, you must upload the following documents:

  1. Current complete transcript(s) of grades. Unofficial or online transcripts must display student name, school name, grade and credit hours earned for each course, and term in which each course was taken.
  2. Copy of the first two pages of the most recently filed IRS Form 1040 used for the Financial Information Page

Your application requires an online recommendation completed by a teacher or counselor who knows you well enough to speak to your community, civic, or career achievements and assess your personal characteristics, motivation, future goals and aspirations. A parent or guardian is not eligible as a recommender for this program. The recommendation must be submitted by 3:00 p.m. Central Time March 30, 2020.
