Kaiser Permanente Washington Employee Scholarship Program

Kaiser Permanente Washington now offers various scholarships to assist Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington (KFHPWA) employees and their children or grandchildren who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs. Employees may receive all scholarships for which they are eligible.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Kaiser Permanente employees may receive all scholarships for which they are eligible. Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

Ethel Taylor Endowed Scholarship

  • Be a continuous full-time or part-time (.5 FTE or above) Kaiser Permanente employee with a minimum of one year of employment in the state of Washington as of the application deadline date
  • Plan to enroll in full-time or part-time undergraduate study or graduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the upcoming academic year
  • Plan to pursue a degree or certificate* in business administration, data resource management, health care administration, health plan (insurance services), human resource management, information systems management, leadership, marketing, policy, public administration, quality, or related study or a related field**

*Certification programs must be through an accredited institution and must run on a standard academic semester calendar. Certification programs must be a minimum of one semester/term in length and applicants must be enrolled at the time awards are disbursed.

**The field of study must relate to the employee’s present position or contribute to the employee’s value and potential growth.

Exclusions include:

  • Attendance at conventions
  • Self-study or correspondence courses
  • Licensing/certification and renewal fees
  • Professional seminars or short courses
  • Employees who are eligible to apply for Continuing Education (CE) funds through their union collective bargaining agreement are ineligible for this award

Vera Miller Scholarships for Career Development

  • Be a continuous full-time or part-time (.5 FTE or above) Kaiser Permanente employee with a minimum of one year of employment in the state of Washington as of the application deadline date
  • Career growth opportunities for Patient Account Representative (PAR), Patient Care Representative (PCR), or Customer Service Specialist (CSS) roles
  • Plan to enroll in full-time or part-time undergraduate study or graduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year

Bernice Cohen Sachs, MD Scholarship

  • Be a continuous full-time or part-time (.5 FTE or above) Kaiser Permanente employee with a minimum of one year of employment in the state of Washington as of the application deadline date
    OR
  • Be a child or grandchild, age 27 and under of a full-time of part-time (.5 FTE or above) Kaiser Permanente employee with a minimum of one year of employment in the state of Washington* as of the application deadline date
    AND
  • Self-identify as female
  • Plan to enroll in full-time graduate study in medicine at an accredited medical school for the entire upcoming academic year

*The child or grandchild does not need to be from or reside in the state of Washington.

William C. Butts, PhD, Scholarship

  • Be a continuous full-time or part-time (.5 FTE or above) Kaiser Permanente employee with a minimum of one year of employment in the state of Washington as of the application deadline date
  • Plan to enroll in full-time or part-time undergraduate study or graduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the upcoming academic year
  • Plan to pursue a degree in the laboratory sciences field

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $3,000 award. Up to 20 awards will be granted.

Awards are not renewable, but students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Awards are for undergraduate and graduate study except for the Bernice Cohen Sachs, MD Scholarship which is limited to graduate study.

If eligible, employees can receive more than one award scholarship.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in June.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. Payment is made in early August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances

Financial need will be considered. Recipients must demonstrate need.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc. play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course, and term in which each course was taken.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
