The Donald Beggs and The James D. McClaskey Scholarship Awards Program
Application status: Closed

Midrex Technologies, Inc. is proud to sponsor The Donald Beggs Scholarship Program and The James D. McClaskey Scholarship Awards Program. The scholarships are intended to assist and encourage the education of qualified students who are children of employees of Midrex Technologies, Inc.

The program was established in 1979 when Don Beggs, co-inventor of the patented MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process and one of the world’s preeminent authorities on heat processing of materials, retired from Midrex Corporation after 43 years of service. His innovations in the field of direct reduction have played and will continue to play a significant role in revolutionizing the steel industry.

The James D. McClaskey scholarship was added in 2018, in recognition of retiring CEO, Jim McClaskey, who retired from Midrex in 2017 after 43 years of service. He was instrumental in the development of Midrex’s after-market and field service businesses and as President from 2003-2014, he led the company during a period of unprecedented growth.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to The Donald Beggs and The James D. McClaskey Scholarship Awards Program must be:

  • Dependent children, 23 years of age or under, of a full-time Midrex Technologies, Inc. employee with two or more years of service as of the application deadline date.
  • High school seniors, graduates, or current postsecondary undergraduates who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.

Also eligible are children of employees on disability, children of Midrex Technologies, Inc. retirees, and children of employees who died before retirement, provided the child was enrolled in high school or college at the time of the employee’s retirement or death. In addition, in the year that the child is a candidate, he or she must be solely dependent upon and permanently reside with the employee or the surviving natural parent.
