Sacramento County Black Midwives Scholarship Program

Sacramento County is providing financial assistance to Black students studying to be midwives through the Sacramento County Black Midwives Scholarship Program.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to the Sacramento County Black Midwives Scholarship must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of the state of California.
  • Plan to serve in Sacramento County.
  • Self-identify as Black or African American.
  • Be high school seniors, high school graduates (with a high school diploma or GED) current undergraduate or graduate students.
  • Plan to enroll in one the following midwifery licensing programs for the entire upcoming academic year:
    • Mercy In Action College of Midwifery – Idaho
    • University of California San Francisco, Nurse Midwifery – California
    • Cal State Fullerton Nurse Midwifery – California
    • Florida School of Traditional Midwifery – Florida
    • National College of Midwifery – New Mexico
    • Bastyr University – Washington
    • Midwives College of Utah – Utah
    • National Midwifery Institute – Vermont

Current nurses and non-traditional students are encouraged to apply.

Awards

The authorized distribution for new awards is $100,000, with $50,000 awarded in each of two application cycles. Up to 2 awards of up to $25,000 each will be granted per application cycle.

Award amounts will be determined based on the recipient’s school choice and will not exceed the cost of attendance there.

Awards are not renewable; however, students may reapply to the program once per academic year provided they meet eligibility requirements.

Awards are for midwifery certificate, undergraduate and graduate study programs only at eligible institutions.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in early July.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Sacramento County.  Payment is made in August.

Selection of Finalists and Recipients

Scholarship America will select scholarship finalists based upon:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of career and educational goals and objectives
  • Two essay questions
  • Any unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation

Apart from an essay question, financial data will not be collected or considered.

From the pool of qualified finalists, Sacramento County will select recipients. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.  All applicants agree to accept decisions as final.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than May 9, 2024 3:00 pm Central Time.
