Military Commanders' Scholarship Fund

The New York Chapter of the American Logistics Association (ALA) has established a scholarship program to assist children of select active duty, reserve, National Guard or retired members of the United States military who plan to continue their education in college. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice.

As of 2018, the Military Commanders’ Scholarship Fund has awarded $610,000 in scholarships to qualified students.

This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability or national origin.

Applicants to the Military Commanders’ Scholarship Fund must be:

  • Be dependent children of active duty, reserve, National Guard or retired members of the United States military who hold valid Exchange & Commissary shopping privileges at the time of application.
  • Be high school seniors or graduates who have not attended college yet and plan to enroll in a full time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • Have a minimum cumulative 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent, at the time of application.

Only the first 100 applications received will be acknowledged and processed. The website will close when 100 applications are received. Incomplete or ineligible applications will not be accepted.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $5,000 award. Provided there are qualified applicants, two (2) awards will be given per branch of service (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard).

Awards are one-time only and not renewable.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

The first 100 applicants will be notified in late March. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of the New York Chapter of the ALA. Payments are made in one installment in early August. Checks are mailed to each recipient’s home address and are made payable to the school for the student.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • academic record
  • demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • honors
  • work experience
  • statement of goals and aspirations
  • unusual personal or family circumstances
  • an outside appraisal

Financial need will be considered. Recipients will be selected from a pool of qualified applicants with consideration given to those who demonstrate the greatest need.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of the New York Chapter of the ALA play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

 

Application Information

Interested students must complete the application and mail it along with the following documents postmarked no later than <strong>February 16</strong>:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades to Scholarship America . Grade reports are not acceptable. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grade and credit hours earned for each course, and term in which each course was taken.
  • A copy of the parent’s Form DD214, Statement of Service or other proof of service to verify eligibility.

Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information. Instructions for completing the Financial Data section of the application are included. Applications are evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, answer all questions as completely as possible. Incomplete applications will not be evaluated. All information received is considered confidential and is reviewed only by Scholarship America.

Applicants must print the page(s) of the application containing the Applicant Appraisal and Transcript Information sections (if part of the application) and submit to the appropriate individuals for completion (if applicable). These sections cannot be completed electronically.

Mail the completed application form (including the completed Appraisal and Transcript sections if part of the application, and any other required documents) to Scholarship America by the program’s application postmark deadline: May 21, 2019. The mailing address is on the application form.
