Mitsui Sons’ & Daughters’ Scholarship Program
Application status: Closed

The Mitsui U.S.A Foundation has established a merit based scholarship program to encourage children of employees who plan to pursue postsecondary education in college and vocational school programs. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study (entire academic year students) at any U.S. accredited postsecondary institution of the student’s choice.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to the Mitsui Sons’ & Daughters’ Scholarship Program must be:

  • Dependent* children of full time locally-hired staff of Mitsui USA or of one of its Qualified Group Companies (QGC)** [those companies located within the U.S. (including its territories) which have an indirect or direct ownership of 80% of more by Mitsui & Co. (U.S.A.), Inc. or Mitsui & Co., Ltd.]. Employees must have a minimum of one year of employment with Mitsui USA or with a Qualified Group Company** as of the application deadline date.
*Dependent children are defined as natural and legally adopted children or stepchildren who qualify as federal tax exemptions to the employee, with U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency.
**A Mitsui Group Company must be qualified at the time of the verification deadline of April 1st each year.
  • High school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at a U.S.* accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.
*Full-time undergraduate study in the United States only.

The children of Mitsui USA Foundation directors and officers are not eligible to participate in the program.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation

Scholarship awards will be made proportionally based on two categories of applications: (1) Students entering postsecondary education for the first time; and (2) students already attending or who have attended a postsecondary school. Awards will be made to these two groups of students in proportion to the number of applications received from each category.

Previous applicants who were not selected will be given preference, if the applicant is well qualified.

Financial need will not be considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Mitsui, Mitsui U.S.A., a Group Company, or the Mitsui U.S.A. Foundation play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision of Scholarship America as final.

Award Amounts

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $5,000 award.  The number of awards will be up to thirty-six (36), to be determined by The Mitsui U.S.A. Foundation each year.

The awards are not renewable, but students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Awards are for undergraduate study in the United States only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in April whether or not they have been selected to receive an award.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of The Mitsui U.S.A. Foundation and applicable, Mitsui Qualified Group Company participant.  The payment is made in one installment in mid July.
