Mitsui U.S.A Sons' & Daughters' Scholarships
Application status: Closed

The Mitsui U.S.A Foundation has established a merit based scholarship program to encourage children of employees who plan to pursue postsecondary education in college and vocational school programs. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study (entire academic year students) at any U.S. accredited postsecondary institution of the student’s choice.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability, or national origin.

Applicants to the Mitsui U.S.A. Sons’ & Daughters’ Scholarships must be:

  • Dependent* children of full-time locally-hired staff of Mitsui U.S.A. or of one of its Qualified Group Companies (QGC) [owned 80% or more, directly, by Mitsui, located within the U.S., including all U.S. states and territories if QGC has an applicable employee base]. Employees must have a minimum of one year employment with Mitsui U.S.A. or with a Qualified Group Company** as of the application date.
*Dependent children are defined as natural and legally adopted children or stepchildren who qualify as federal tax exemptions to the employee, with U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency.
**A Mitsui Group Company must be qualified at the time of the verification deadline of April 1st each year.
  • High school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at a U.S. accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.

Scholarship awards will be made proportionally based on two catedories of applications: (1) Students entering postsecondary education for the first time; and (2) students already attending or who have attended a postsecondary school. Awards will be made to these two groups of students in proportion to the number of applications received from each category.

Previous applicants who were not selected will be given preference, if the applicant is well qualified.

Financial need will not be considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Mitsui, Mitsui U.S.A., a Group Company, or the Mitsui U.S.A. Foundation play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision of Scholarship America as final.

Award Amounts

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $5,000 award.  The number of awards will be up to forty (40), to be determined by The Mitsui U.S.A. Foundation each year.

The awards are not renewable, but students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Awards are for undergraduate study in the United States only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in April whether or not they have been selected to receive an award.
