The NextEra Energy Scholarship Award for Students in SECME
Application status: Closed

NextEra Energy Foundation has established a scholarship program to assist eligible Florida high school seniors involved in SECME who plan to continue their education in college.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to The NextEra Energy Scholarship Award for Students in SECME must:

  • Identify as diverse in background.
  • Be a high school senior residing in Brevard County, Broward County, Escambia County, Flagler County, Hendry County, Manatee County, Miami Dade County, Palm Beach County, Seminole County, or Volusia County in Florida who have at least one-year involvement in SECME by the end of senior year.
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • Have a minimum unweighted grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent).

Children of NextEra Energy and Florida Power & Light Company are ineligible.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $5,000 award, anually. Up to ten (10) awards will be granted. Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent, in a full-time course of study, and continuation of the program by NextEra Energy Foundation.

Assuming there are qualified applicants, the intent is to allocate at least 50% of the awards to students pursuing a STEM degree.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in May.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of NextEra Energy Foundation. Payment will be processed in August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • A SECME essay
  • Academic performance
  • Community service
  • Participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • A statement of uncommon personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation completed by an SECME club sponsor, teacher or guidance counselor.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of the NextEra Energy Foundation, NextEra Energy or Florida Power & Light Company play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload an official copy of those test scores separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than April 4, 2024 3:00 pm Central Time.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
