Northwestern Mutual Hometown HBCU Connection

Northwestern Mutual Foundation has established a scholarship program to assist students who plan to continue their education at an accredited Historically Black College or University (HBCU) for the entire upcoming academic year.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to the Northwestern Mutual Hometown HBCU Connection must:

  • Be a Spring of 2025 graduate of one of the following high schools in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area:
Carmen Schools of Science and Technology Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy
Golda Meir School Hmong American Peace Academy Kingdom Prep Lutheran High School
Milwaukee Academy of Science Rufus King International High School Ronald Reagan High School
St. Augustine Prep

OR

  • Be participating in College Possible Milwaukee, or Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s Grad Plus program, as of the application deadline date

AND

  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study as a first-year student at an accredited Historically Black College or University (HBCU) for the entire upcoming academic year
  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident

Children of executive level Northwestern Mutual and Northwestern Mutual Foundation employees are ineligible.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $7,500 award. Up to nine (9) awards will be granted.

Awards may be renewed for an additional year or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance (maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale) in a full-time course of study.

Awards can be used for qualified eligible education-related expenses only such as tuition, fees, books, and required supplies.

Recipients may be offered additional supports and mentorship opportunities, etc. through College Possible Milwaukee or Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee’s Grad Plus program.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in early April.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Northwestern Mutual Foundation. Payment is made in August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances

Financial need is not considered.

Assuming there are qualified applicants, preference will be given to students from preferred high schools.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Northwestern Mutual Foundation play a part in the selection.

Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
    • Student name
    • School name
    • Grades
    • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.
