The 2025 Nuveen Invest in the Future Scholarship supports expectant first-generation college students who dream big and are determined to make a meaningful mark on their career path.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, America’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to the Nuveen Invest in the Future Scholarship must:

  • Have an existing relationship with one of the following non-profit organizations:
    • Boys & Girls Club of Chicago (Chicago, IL*)
    • Percy L. Julian High School (Chicago, IL*)
    • Youth, Inc. (New York City, NY*)
    • KIPP Academy Alumni (Charlotte, NC*)
    • The Academy of Goal Achievers: TOAGA (Charlotte, NC*)
    • The Sutton Trust (London, England)
    • ChickenSoup Foundation (Hong Kong, China)
    • Youth off the Street (Sydney, Australia)
  • Be high school seniors (US, China, Australia)/or in their final year of upper or higher secondary school/sixth form college (UK, China)
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university (or international equivalent) for the entire upcoming academic year
  • Interest in potentially pursuing a career in Financial Services or Asset Management, including but not limited to degrees related to Business Management, Marketing & Communications, Human Resources, Legal, Information Technology (IT), Finance, Real Estate, Accounting, etc.
  • Be a first-generation college student* and/or be of socio-economically disadvantaged status**

*For the purposes of this scholarship program, first-generation college student is defined as neither parent/guardian having ever received a 4-year college degree (or international equivalent)
**For purposes of this scholarship program, socio-economically disadvantaged is defined as: participation in federal social welfare program (or international equivalent such as, but not limited to: eligible for free school meals, live in neighborhood of socio-economic deprivation, first generation of their family to attend university, have been in local authority care)

Nuveen employees and their immediate family members are not eligible

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $5,000 award for the first year. Up to five (5) awards will be granted. Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon maintaining a minimum grade point average 2.5 or above on a 4.0 (or equivalent) scale in a full-time course of study.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in May.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Nuveen Services, LLC. Payment is made in early August for recipients in the U.S. and Canada. Award payments for recipients outside of U.S. and Canada will be ongoing from early August.

Awards can be used for any education-related expenses.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Short essay describing a significant personal circumstance that has shaped your academic journey and explain how you have overcome challenges or adapted to these circumstances to achieve your educational goals
  • Short essay response to ONE of the following topics:
    • Describe a pivotal experience that inspired you to pursue higher education in your chosen field. How did this experience shape your academic goals and career aspirations? What unique perspectives do you bring to the field of study and to campus?
      OR
    • There is growing global interest in responsible, sustainable, and impact investments that support financial returns alongside a positive impact on the environment, equity, health, communities, etc. These investments span asset classes from impact bonds to microloans to real assets like forests and farmlands. In 300 words or less, identify and describe an existing responsible or sustainable investment that has a positive impact and share why it is particularly meaningful to you.

Academic evaluation will include a review of the grade/mark average based on the grading system used in the applicant’s country and a review of the results of academic examinations.

Financial need is not considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Nuveen Services, LLC, play a part in the selection.

Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  1. A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
  2. Upper secondary school diploma or certificate, if earned (International applicants only).
  3. Results of examinations (International applicants only).

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores (US students only), and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
