Sol Siegal Scholarship Program

Olympic Steel Inc. has established a scholarship program to assist children and dependents of employees who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to the Sol Siegal Scholarship Program must:

  • Be dependent* children or legal dependents of full-time or part-time employees of Olympic Steel, Inc., Action Stainless & Alloys, Berlin Metals, Central Tube & Bar, Chicago Tube & Iron, EZ-Dumper®, Integrity Stainless, McCullough Industries, Metal-Fab, or Shaw Stainless & Alloy who work a minimum of 24 hours per week and have completed one year of continuous employment as of the application deadline.
    *Dependent children are defined as natural or legally adopted children, stepchildren or legal wards living in the employee’s household or primarily supported by the employee.
  • Be high school seniors or graduates, or current postsecondary undergraduates, who plan to enroll or are already enrolled in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale to apply.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $2,500 award renewable for $2,000.  Up to ten (10) scholarships will be granted. Two (2) awards will be granted as follows: (1) award will be given to an applicant who satisfies the diversity requirement and (1) award will be given to an applicant attending a 2 year or vocational-technical school.

Recipients will represent the ethnic, geographic and occupational diversity within Olympic Steel, as long as qualified applications are received.

Recipient’s parent or guardian must remain employed at the time of scholarship check distribution.

Renewal students will receive a $2,000 award. Scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years within a maximum five-year period or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first, based on satisfactory academic performance (2.50 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale) and continued parental employment. Renewal awards will be honored for children or legal dependents of employees who become retired, permanently disabled or deceased subsequent to the initial award being made.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Strong academic performance
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in at least two school and community activities
  • An online recommendation from an employer or leader in a community organization (excluding family members and relatives).

Financial need is not considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Olympic Steel, Inc. play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in April.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Olympic Steel, Inc. Payments are made in early August.

Your application is not complete unless all required materials are submitted electronically.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
  • A high resolution, color photo that shows you from the waist up and includes your shoulders. Do not crop or alter the photo.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than March 7, 2024 3:00 pm Central Time.
