The Pittsburgh Foundation College/County Single Year Awards

The Pittsburgh Foundation provides scholarship opportunities for students to pursue their educational goals. Scholarships are available for graduating high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate, medical and professional school students who are attending community colleges, four-year universities, graduate schools, and career/technical schools.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants will complete one application for consideration for all the scholarship funds under The Pittsburgh Foundation College/County Single Year Awards.

Applicants for the following awards will apply to The Pittsburgh Foundation College/County Single Year Awards. One common application is completed to apply to any of the below funds. Applicants must meet the following criteria and the criteria of one or more of the scholarships listed:

  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident (unless specified otherwise)
  • Be a graduating high school senior or graduate, GED holder, current undergraduate, or graduate student
  • Be a resident of or enrolled in or plan to enroll at a college or university in:
    • Pennsylvania
    • West Virginia
    • OR
    • Be a resident of the United Kingdom or Northern Ireland enrolled or planning to enroll in a college or university in the United States
  • Be enrolled in or planning to enroll in full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college/university, or vocational-technical school in the United States
    • Certification programs must be through an accredited institution and must run on a standard academic semester calendar. Certification programs must be a minimum of one semester/term in length and applicants must be enrolled at the time awards are disbursed in August
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent), unless specified otherwise
  • Awards are for undergraduate or graduate study only

Broecker Memorial Fund

  • Current undergraduate enrolled at a college or university in Allegheny County
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Be pursuing a degree in Social Work, Environmental Studies, or Teaching
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Comptaro, Elden, Lewis Combined Scholarship Funds

  • Graduating high school senior residing in Allegheny County
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Conservation Officers of Pennsylvania Scholarship Fund

  • Graduating high school senior or graduate, GED holder, or current undergraduate residing in Pennsylvania
  • Enrolled or planning to enroll in a two- or four-year college or university
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Pursue a degree in:
    • Biology
    • Ecology
    • Environmental or Conservation studies
    • Wildlife
    • or a related field
  • Financial need is considered but not required
  • Have or have had a Pennsylvania hunting license
  • Preference given to applicants associated with:
    • Conservation Officers of Pennsylvania (COPA)
    • Pennsylvania Game Commission
    • Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Don Brockett Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Graduating high school senior or graduate, GED holder, or current undergraduate enrolled or planning to
    enroll at:

    • Carnegie Mellon University
    • Chatham University
    • Point Park University
  • GPA between 2.5 and 3.5
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Have a special talent or interest in the performing and theatrical arts
  • Be involved in extracurricular and/or other activities outside of school which reflect an ordinary (typical) student who shows extraordinary self-discipline and motivation to goals larger than self
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Dorothy & Richard Barr Westmoreland County High School Scholarship Fund

  • Graduating high school senior residing in Westmoreland County
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA
  • Financial need is considered but not required
  • Preference given to applicants who show community leadership
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Edward and Dorothy Livingston Fund

  • Graduating high school senior or graduate, GED holder, or current undergraduate enrolled or planning to enroll at an accredited school in Allegheny County
    • Preference given to:
      • Junior/senior level applicants in a four-year institution
      • Second-year students in a two-year program
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Be pursuing a degree in Nursing
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to applicants who self-identify as historically underserved students:
    • American Indian or Alaska Native
    • Asian
    • Black, African, or African American
    • Hispanic or Latino
    • Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander
  • Preference given to applicants who self-identify as female
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 2 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate or graduate study only

Elaine Sirkin Forbes Scholarship Fund

  • Graduating high school senior at any Allegheny County high school
  • Enroll in a two- or four-year college or university
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Pursue a degree in visual, performance, or media arts
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 2 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Freda Gray Charitable Fund

  • Current undergraduate student who graduated from a high school in Allegheny County
  • Be enrolled or plan to enroll in a two- or four-year college or university
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Be pursuing a degree in Foreign Language
  • Financial need is considered but not required
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate or graduate study only

Joseph “Murph” Irwin Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Graduating high school senior who graduated from St. Louise De Marillac grade school in
    Pittsburgh
  • Minimum 3.3 GPA
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • Participated in at least one varsity or junior varsity sport while in high school
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 2 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Learning Fund

  • Current undergraduate who is entering their 3rd or 4th year post-high school graduation who attended a Southwestern PA high school
  • Enroll in a four-year college or university in Western Pennsylvania
  • Minimum 3.2 GPA
  • Pursue a degree in:
    • Psychology
    • Social Work
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 2 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Lightbown Family Scholarship Fund

  • Graduating high school senior or graduate, GED holder, or current undergraduate student residing in Allegheny County
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Be pursuing a degree in Education
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to applicants who self-identify as female
  • Previous recipients are encouraged to reapply in consecutive years
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Louise Salinger Academy of Fashion Fund

  • Graduating high school senior residing in Allegheny County
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Be pursuing a degree in Fashion Design
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Melville Alexander Eberhardt Memorial Fund

  • Graduating high school senior residing in Pennsylvania
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Michael Baker International Iraq Survivors Scholarship Fund

  • Graduating high school senior or graduate, or GED holder who resides in one of the following Pennsylvania counties:
    • Allegheny County
    • Beaver County
    • Butler County
    • Cumberland County
    • Dauphin County
    • Montgomery County
    • Philadelphia County
    • Washington County
    • Westmoreland County
  • Minimum 2.8 GPA
  • Financial need is considered but not required
  • Have a parent or spouse who is a U.S. service man/woman in active military service or who served in any
    US war since March 2003
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Pittsburgh Jazz Society/Howard Gendell M.D. Scholarship Endowment

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student enrolled or planning to enroll at:
    • Carnegie Mellon University
    • Chatham University
    • Duquesne University
    • The University of Pittsburgh
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Be studying Jazz Music
  • Financial need is considered but not required
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate or graduate study only

Sabina Hilger Walsh and Harold Rex Walsh Scholarship Fund

  • Current undergraduate enrolled at a Pennsylvania two- or four-year college or university having at least one year of undergraduate study post-high school graduation
  • Resident of one of the following Pennsylvania counties:
    • Allegheny
    • Beaver
  • Enroll in a four-year college or university in Pennsylvania
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Pursue a degree in Education
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Samuel J. Goldstein, Esquire, Scholarship Fund

  • Resident of one of the following Pennsylvania counties:
    • Allegheny County
    • Armstrong County
    • Beaver County
    • Butler County
    • Washington County
    • Westmoreland County
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Enrolled in or planning to enroll in an accredited law school in Pennsylvania
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to applicants of the Jewish faith
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 3 award(s) will be granted for graduate study only

Sheena M. Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Graduating high school senior or graduate, GED holder, or current undergraduate and a resident of one of the following Pennsylvania Counties:
    • Allegheny County
    • Armstrong County
    • Beaver County
    • Bedford County
    • Blair County
    • Butler County
    • Cambria County
    • Cameron County

The 14th Quartermaster/Operation Desert Storm Scholarship Fund

  • Resident of Westmoreland County
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Financial need is considered but not required
  • Be considering a career within a military branch
      • OR

    Have a parent who is a veteran or in Army or Army Reserve active duty

  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate or graduate study only

The Virginia E. Lewis Scholarship Fund

  • Current undergraduate student residing in Allegheny County
  • Be enrolled or plan to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college or university
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Be pursuing a degree in Art or Art History
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 4 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Vladimir R. Bakaleinikoff Memorial Fund

  • Current undergraduate student who graduated from a high school in Allegheny County
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Be pursuing a degree in Music
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 6 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Vocational Training Fund For Girls

  • Graduating high school senior or graduate, GED holder, or current undergraduate residing in Allegheny County
  • Be enrolled or plan to enroll at:
    • An accredited career/technical school
      OR
    • Point Park University
      OR
    • Robert Morris University
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to applicants who self-identify as female
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Wayne Rawley Fund

  • Graduating high school senior enrolled or planning to enroll at:
    • Carnegie Mellon University
      OR
    • The University of Pittsburgh
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Be pursuing a degree in:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
  • Preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • If the applicant pool allows, awards will be granted to an equal number of applicants from each university
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

William Henry Fitch Memorial Trust

  • Resident of Allegheny County
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Pursue a degree in Nursing (must be an accredited program)
  • Financial need is considered but not required
  • Preference given to:
    • Junior/senior level applicants in a four-year institution
    • Second-year students in a two-year program
  • Preference given to applicants who self-identify as historically underserved students:
    • American Indian or Alaska Native
    • Asian
    • Black, African, or African American
    • Hispanic or Latino
    • Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Awards are not renewable, but applicants may reapply each year they meet the eligibility criteria
  • An estimated 1 award(s) will be granted for undergraduate study only

Awards

Total distribution and the amount of each award for each fund shall be determined by The Pittsburgh Foundation.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in late June.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of The Pittsburgh Foundation. Payment is made in July or early August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic performance
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances

Financial need, as calculated by Scholarship America, will be considered but may not be required.

If an award requires or prefers applicants who demonstrate financial need, a one-time honorarium award of $2,500 may be granted to those who do not demonstrate financial need.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of The Pittsburgh Foundation play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.


As part of your application, you must upload the following:

    • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
      • Student name
      • School name
      • Grades
      • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.
