Allegheny Scholarship Programs

The Pittsburgh Foundation provides scholarship opportunities for students to pursue their educational goals. Scholarships are available for graduating high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate, medical and professional school students who are attending community colleges, four-year universities, graduate schools, and career/technical schools.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team. Awards for this scholarship are granted to eligible recipients without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability, or national origin.

Applicants will complete one application for consideration for all the scholarship funds under the Allegheny Scholarship Programs.

Scholarships funds included in the Allegheny Scholarship Programs Application:

  • Broecker Memorial Fund
  • Charles ‘Chubby’ Brown Memorial Fund
  • Comptaro, Elden, Lewis Combined Scholarship Funds
  • East Allegheny Student Aid Scholarship Fund
  • Edward and Dorothy Livingston Fund
  • Freda Gray Charitable Fund
  • Katherine and Emma Uhlinger Trust Fund
  • Louise Salinger Academy of Fashion Fund
  • The Virginia E. Lewis Scholarship Fund
  • Unknown Donor Scholarship Fund
  • Vladimir R. Bakaleinikoff Memorial Fund
  • Vocational Training Fund For Girls
  • William Henry Fitch Memorial Trust
  • Wojdak Scholarship Fund

Applicants will apply to the Allegheny Scholarship Programs. One common application is completed to apply to any of the below funds. Applicants must meet the following criteria and the criteria of one or more of the scholarships listed:

  • High school seniors at an Allegheny County High School OR current undergraduates who graduated from an Allegheny County High School.
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the United States for the entire upcoming academic year*.
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent (unless specified otherwise).

*Certification programs must be through an accredited institution and must run on a standard academic semester calendar. Certification programs must be a minimum of one semester/term in length and applicants must be enrolled at the time awards are disbursed in August. 

 

Broecker Memorial Fund

  • Be a current undergraduate at a college or university in Allegheny County
  • Recipients must be pursuing Social Work, Environmental studies, or Teaching
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need

Charles ‘Chubby’ Brown Memorial Fund

  • Recipients must be high school seniors at Shaler Area High School
  • Be pursuing a degree in Social Work, Education or Teaching, Policing or Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice, or Healthcare
  • Preference will be given to minority students
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need

Comptaro, Elden, Lewis Combined Scholarship Funds

  • Be a graduating high school senior
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need

East Allegheny Student Aid Scholarship Fund

  • Recipients must be seniors at East Allegheny High School
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need

Edward and Dorothy Livingston Fund

  • Attend nursing school in Allegheny County, PA
  • Recipients must be pursuing a Nursing degree
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need
  • Preference will be given to junior/senior level students in a four year institution and second year students in a two year program to be considered for priority awarding
  • Preference will be given to minority and female students

Freda Gray Charitable Fund

  • Be a current undergraduate student
  • Be pursuing a Foreign Language degree
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Plan to attend a 2-or 4-year college or university
  • Financial need not required

Katherine and Emma Uhlinger Trust Fund

  • Recipients must be a graduating senior at Springdale High School
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need

Louise Salinger Academy of Fashion Fund

  • Recipients must be high school seniors
  • Recipients must be pursuing a Fashion Design degree
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need

The Virginia E. Lewis Scholarship Fund

  • Be a current undergraduate student
  • Reside in Allegheny County, PA
  • Plan to attend a 2- or 4-year college or university
  • Recipients must be pursuing an Art or Art History degree
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need

Unknown Donor Scholarship Fund

  • Recipients must be high school seniors at any Pittsburgh Public High School
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need
  • Preference will be given to those who self-identify as female

Vladimir R. Bakaleinikoff Memorial Fund

  • Pursue a degree or studies in music
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need

Vocational Training Fund For Girls

  • Attend or plan to attend an accredited career/technical school, Point Park  University, or Robert Morris University
  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need
  • Preference will be given to applicants who self-identify as Female

William Henry Fitch Memorial Trust

  • Reside in Allegheny County, PA
  • Be pursuing a degree or studies in nursing in an accredited program
  • Preference will be given to junior/senior level students in a four-year institution and second year students in a two-year program
  • Preference will be given to minority students
  • Preference will be given to students demonstrating financial need

Wojdak Scholarship Fund

  • Recipients must demonstrate financial need

Awards

Distribution amount and number of awards for each fund is determined annually by The Pittsburgh Foundation. Funds that have monies available to issue scholarships will be listed each year.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in late June.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of The Pittsburgh Foundation. Payment is made in early August.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • A statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances

Depending on the fund, financial need may or may not be considered. Financial need, as calculated by Scholarship America, must be demonstrated for the student to receive specific awards.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of The Pittsburgh Foundation play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.


As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.
