Emergency Financial Assistance Program for SNAP Students

The Pohlad Family Foundation, Scholarship America, and Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) have partnered to provide emergency financial assistance to students who are currently enrolled at MCTC and receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

The program is administered by Scholarship America. Scholarship America is the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability or national origin.

Applicants of the Emergency Financial Assistance Program for SNAP Students must be:

  • Attending Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC.)
  • Making satisfactory academic progress with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
  • Taking at least 3 credits in the current semester.
  • Enrolled in SNAP benefits through their parents or have their own SNAP case (determined by MCTC).
  • Experiencing an unforeseen event resulting in a financial emergency that jeopardizes a student’s ability to stay in college.

Eligible Expenses

Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to:

  • Housing/Rent
  • Medical/Dental expenses
  • Personal automobile expenses
  • Child care
  • Public transportation/bus pass
  • Textbooks or computers that have been stolen or destroyed
  • Temporary displacement costs will also be considered

Ineligible expenses include, but are not limited to:

  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol
  • Entertainment expenses
  • Cell phone costs
  • Past due balances to MCTC

Grants

Applicants may be eligible for assistance of up to $750 per student, per calendar year, based on funds available. Students may submit multiple requests for assistance until they reach the $750 cap.

Payment of Grants

Upon approval of the applicant’s request, payment of grants will be made available within one business day through MCTC’s business office.

Notification

Applicants will be notified as to the status of their submitted application within one business day by Scholarship America.

Obligations

Recipients have no obligation to Pohlad Family Foundation, Scholarship America or MCTC.

Revisions

Pohlad Family Foundation, Scholarship America and MCTC reserves the right to review the conditions and procedures of this program and to make changes at any time including termination of the program.

As part of your application, you must upload the following documents:

  1. Current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Unofficial or online transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course, and term in which each course was taken.
  2. Documentation of expenses such as bills, letter of eviction, invoices or receipts.

Your application is not complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
