The United Methodist Children's Home Scholarship Funds

The United Methodist Children’s Home has established a scholarship program to assist applicants who plan to continue their education in college or university.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age,  gender, disability, or national origin.

Applicants to the The United Methodist Children’s Home Scholarship Funds must be:

  • High school seniors or graduates, or current postsecondary undergraduates or graduate level students in the U.S.
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two- or four- year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the U.S. for the entire 2019-2020 academic year.
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent).

In addition to the above criteria, some of the Funds within this program have other eligibility criteria that will be considered when selecting recipients. Please review the Awards tab for additional criteria.

 

Award information:

  • Up to fifty eight (58) awards ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 till be granted. Award amounts will vary based on the designated fund as described below.
  • Awards are not renewable; however, students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.
  • Awards are limited to one award per student per year.
  • Awards are for undergraduate  and graduate study only.

Financial need is not considered.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • academic record
  • demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • work experience
  • statement of goals and aspirations
  • unusual personal or family circumstances
  • an online recommendation

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of The United Methodist Children’s Home play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Scholarship Funds
  • B&R Phillips Funds
    Awards: Eight (8) awards of $4,000 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility requirement: Must be a UMCH resident. Preference given to those who are, or have been, associated with or received assistance services from the UMCH of the North or South conference.
  • Emily Anne Burgess Estate Fund
    Award: One (1) award of $2,000 will be granted.
    Additional eligibility: Must have demonstrated interest in music or math.
  • HM Reeves Education Foundation
    Awards: Three (3) awards of $4,000 each will be granted.
  • Holt Fund
    Awards: Six (6) awards of $4,000 each will be granted
  • Jack & Wanda Reaves Education
    Award: One (1) award of $1,000 will be granted.
  • Lee Corvette Fund
    Awards: Five (5) awards of $4,000 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility: Must be a UMCH resident. Preference will be given to those who are, or have been, associated with or received assistance services from the UMCH of the North or South Georgia conference.
  • Moore Memorial
    Awards: Fifteen (15) awards of $4,000 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility: Must be attending a Methodist-affiliated college.
  • N S Elizer
    Award: One (1) award of $4,000 will be granted.
    Additional eligibility: Must be a UMCH resident attending Young Harris College, Reinhardt College, or Oxford College of Emory University. Preference will be given to those who are, or have been, associated with or received assistance services from the UMCH of the North or South Georgia conference.
  • Patterson Higher Education
    Awards: Three (3) awards of $4,000 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility: Must be a UMCH resident. Preference will be given to those who are, or have been, associated with or received assistance services from the UMCH of the North or South Georgia conference.
  • RC Carlton Education
    Awards: Two (2) awards of $2,000 each will be granted.
  • Reuel & Naomi S Burgess
    Awards: Three (3) awards of $2,000 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility: Must have demonstrated interest in music or math.
  • Reuel A. & Naomi S. Burgess Fund
    Awards: Eight (8) awards of $4,000 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility: Must have demonstrated interest in music or math.
  • WL Monroe Sr Trust
    Awards: Two (2) awards of $2,000 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility: One male, one female recipient.

Notification

Applicants will be notified in February. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of  The United Methodist Children’s Home. Awards will be paid in one installment in early August.

As part of your application, you must upload the following documents:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Unofficial or online transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

Also as part of your application, one online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf.

Your application is not complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
