Walman/Charles R. Patterson Scholarship Program
Application status: Closed

The Walman/Charles R. Patterson Scholarship Program was established in 1999 by Walman and Charles R. Patterson to assist employees’ children who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability, or national origin. Additionally, an effort will be made to represent the diversity of the qualified employee population and applicant pool.

Applicants to the Walman/Charles R. Patterson Scholarship Program must:

  • Be children (natural, adopted, stepchild, legal dependent, or legal ward), age 25 and under, of full-time Walman employees who have a minimum of one year continuous employment as of the application deadline date or part-time employees who have a minimum of three years employment with the company as of the application deadline date. Children of deceased or retired employees (normal retirement age of 62) who were employed with the company at the time of death or retirement are also eligible.
  • Be high school seniors or graduates, or students who are already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study for the entire academic year at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school no later than the upcoming fall term.

Children of Walman Officers or Directors are ineligible.

Parents of recipients must be actively employed when scholarship awards are announced.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • Statement of goals and aspirations
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An online recommendation.

Once scholarship recipients are selected, financial data is reviewed to determine the amount of each award. Students whose parents choose not to supply the requested financial information will not be eligible to receive an award.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Walman play a part in the selection. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.  All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an award ranging from $1,500 to $5,000. Awards are not renewable, but students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Awards are for undergraduate study only for the recipient’s first undergraduate degree, and may only be received a maximum of four times.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in June.
