Wellroot Family Services Scholarship Program
(Formerly Methodist Childrens Home)

Wellroot Family Services has established a scholarship program to assist applicants who plan to continue their education in college or university.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants to the Wellroot Family Services Scholarship Program must meet all the following criteria:

  • Be high school seniors or graduates, current postsecondary undergraduates, or graduate level students in the U.S.
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two- or four- year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the U.S. for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent.

In addition to the above criteria, some of the Funds within this program have other eligibility criteria that will be considered when selecting recipients. Please review the Awards tab for additional criteria.

Award information:

  • Awards ranging from $1,000 to $3,500 will be granted. Award amounts will vary based on the designated funds as described below.
  • Awards are not renewable; however, students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.
  • Awards are limited to one award per student per year.
  • Awards are for undergraduate  and graduate study only.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • academic record
  • demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • work experience
  • statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • unusual personal or family circumstances
  • an online recommendation

Financial need will not be considered.

In addition to the above criteria, some of the Funds within this program have other eligibility criteria that will be considered when selecting recipients.  Please see individual Funds below.

Scholarship Funds
  • B&R Phillips Funds
    Awards: Eight (8) awards of $3,000 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility requirement: Must be a Wellroot Family Services (formerly UMCH) resident. Preference given to those who are, or have been, associated with or received assistance services from Wellroot Family Services of the North or South Georgia conference.
  • Emily Anne Burgess Estate Fund
    Award: Ten (10) awards of $2,500 will be granted.
    Additional eligibility:Must have demonstrated interest in music, elementary education, or STEM.
  • Holt Fund
    Awards: Ten (10) awards of $2,000 each will be granted. Additional Eligibility: Recipients will be referred by Wellroot Family Services and award amount will be determined by Wellroot Family Services.
  • Jack & Wanda Reaves Education
    Award: Six (6) awards of $2,000 will be granted.
  • Lee Corvette Fund
    Awards: Five (5) awards of $3,500 each will be granted. Additional eligibility requirement: Must be a WELLROOT FAMILY SERVICES (FORMERLY UMCH) resident. Preference will be given to those who are, or have been, associated with or received assistance services from the WELLROOT FAMILY SERVICES (FORMERLY UMCH) of the North or South Georgia conferences.
  • Moore Memorial
    Awards: Twelve (12) awards of $2,000 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility requirement: Must be attending a Methodist-affiliated college.
  • N S Elizer
    Four (4) awards of $3,000 will be granted.
    Additional eligibility requirements: Must be a WELLROOT FAMILY SERVICES (FORMERLY UMCH) resident attending Young Harris College, Reinhardt College, or Oxford College of Emory University. Preference will be given to those who are, or have been, associated with or received assistance services from the WELLROOT FAMILY SERVICES (FORMERLY UMCH) of the North or South Georgia conference.
  • Patterson Higher Education
    Awards: Four (4) awards of $3,000 each will be granted. Additional eligibility requirement: Must be a WELLROOT FAMILY SERVICES (FORMERLY UMCH) resident. Preference will be given to those who are, or have been, associated with or received assistance services from the WELLROOT FAMILY SERVICES (FORMERLY UMCH) of the North or South Georgia conference
  • RC Carlton Education
    Awards: Two (2) awards of $2,000 each will be granted.
  • Reuel & Naomi S Burgess
    Awards: Five (5) awards of $1,500 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility requirement: Must have demonstrated interest in music, elementary education, or STEM.
  • Reuel A. & Naomi S. Burgess Fund
    Awards: Thirty-five (35) awards of $2,400 each will be granted.
    Additional eligibility requirement: Must have demonstrated interest in music, or STEM.
  • WL Monroe Sr Trust
    Awards: Two (2) awards of $2,000 each will be granted. One award will go to a male applicant; the other to a female applicant.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of Wellroot Family Services play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

The Wellroot Family Services Residents and North and South Georgia Wellroot Family Services assistance information for emails of Case Workers, Life Coach, and DFCS will be shared with the Sponsor of this program. The Case Worker, Life Coach, and DFCS will be cc’d on all Scholarship America emails.

Notification

Applicants will be notified in February. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of Wellroot Family Services. Awards will be paid in one installment in early August. No deferrals will be granted. Awards must be used in the award year that they are granted.

As part of your application, you must upload the following documents:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display:
    • Student name
    • School name
    • Grades
    • Credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than December 18, 2024 3:00 pm Central Time.

Your application is not complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
