West Texas Strong Scholarship Program

The Kent Companies have established a scholarship program to assist residents of Midland or Odessa Texas who plan to continue their education in college or vocational school programs.

Founded locally by the late Buck Kent in 1957, The Kent Companies began as Kent Oil and Kent Distributors and still remains a family-owned business. The Kent Companies is comprised of multiple entities including 48 Kent Kwik Convenience Stores; 14 Avis Lube Fast Oil Change Centers, 15 Mr. Payroll Check Cashing locations; 3 Rustic Cafés; 5 Huddle House Restaurants; 3 Baskin Robbins; 7 Kent Car Washes and 2 Kent Tire Stores. The Kent Companies continues to expand their business both locally and out of state. The company continues to win “Best of” in each of the markets they serve.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability, or national origin.

Applicants to the West Texas Strong Memorial Scholarship Program must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a current resident or currently be residing in Midland, TX or Odessa, TX.
  • Plan to enroll in fulltime undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.

Awards

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $2,500 award. Up to three (3) awards will be granted.

Awards are one-time only and not renewable. Past recipients may not reapply.

Awards must be used for education-related expenses limited to tuition, required fees, books, and course-specific supplies.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of career and educational goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an online recommendation.

Financial need is not considered.

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

In no instance does any officer or employee of The Kent Companies play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

Notification

All applicants will be notified in mid-July.

Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of The Kent Companies. Payments are made in one installment in late August.

As part of your application, you must upload the following:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken.

Also as part of your application, one online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf.

Your application is not complete unless all required documents are submitted electronically.
