The Washington Refuse & Recycling Association Scholarship Program

The Washington Refuse & Recycling Association has established a scholarship program to assist employees and their dependent children who plan to continue education in college or vocational school programs. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice.

This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

Applicants of The Washington Refuse & Recycling Association Scholarship Program must be:

  • Employees or dependent* children of employees, of regular member companies and their affiliates of The Washington Refuse & Recycling Association, as defined by The Washington Refuse & Recycling Association bylaws.
    *Dependent children are defined as natural or legally adopted children or stepchildren, under the age of 24, living in the employee’s household or primarily supported by the employee.
  • High school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who are already enrolled in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year. Employees may attend school part-time.

Employees are defined as individuals working and have their principle office location in the state of Washington.

Award information:

  • Up to three (3) awards of $6,000 and one (1) award of $5,000 will be granted.
  • Financial need will be considered. Recipients must demonstrate need.
  • Awards are not renewable; however students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.
  • Awards are for undergraduate study only.

Notification
Applicants will be notified in June. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

Payment of Scholarships
Scholarship America processes scholarship payments on behalf of The Washington Refuse & Recycling Association. Payments are made in August.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

  • Academic record
  • Demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • Statement of educational and career goals and objectives
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • Financial need
  • An online recommendation

Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship America. In no instance does any officer or employee of The Washington Refuse & Recycling Association play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final.

As part of your application, you must upload the following documents:

  • A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. Unofficial or online transcripts must display student name, school name, grades and credit hours for each course and term in which each course was taken,
  • Optional: Supplemental Financial Data Form, if applicable. This form is needed only if parents cannot submit data jointly on the electronic application. The parent who is NOT the employee of Washington Refuse & Recycling Association should complete this supplemental form.

    NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately. If you are uploading a college transcript, those scores are not required.

One online recommendation form must be submitted on your behalf no later than May 8, 2024 3:00 pm Central Time.
